Preventative Care: The First Line of Defense for Your Oral Health

Preventative care is the cornerstone of maintaining a healthy smile. During your routine check-ups every six months, Dr. Alford and Dr. Everett will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums for any signs of cavities, gum disease, or other oral health issues. Our dental hygienists use specialized tools to remove plaque and tartar, helping to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Early detection and treatment can save you from more severe health problems down the road, making preventative care essential for your overall well-being.

Teeth Cleaning: A Key to a Healthy Smile

Regular teeth cleanings are crucial for maintaining good oral hygiene. Our hygienists at Alford Family Dentistry provide thorough cleanings that remove plaque, tartar, and surface stains, leaving your teeth looking and feeling their best. During your cleaning, we’ll also screen for oral cancer, assess your bone structure, and evaluate your current dental work to ensure everything is in top condition. Regular cleanings help prevent gum disease and cavities, keeping your smile healthy and vibrant.

Treat & Restore

  • Periodontal Care: Protecting Your Gums and Overall Health

Periodontal (gum) disease is a serious condition that can affect not only your oral health but also your overall health. Caused by bacteria in plaque and tartar, gum disease can lead to inflammation, gum recession, and even tooth loss if left untreated. At Alford Family Dentistry, we offer comprehensive periodontal care to treat and manage gum disease. Our treatments include deep cleanings to remove plaque and tartar, as well as the use of antibiotics to reduce infection. Regular periodontal care is vital in preventing the progression of gum disease and maintaining both your oral and overall health.

  • Resin Fillings: Restoring Damaged Teeth

Our practice only uses resin, or "white," fillings, however, we will remove amalgam or “silver” fillings. Amalgam fillings have been used in dentistry for years, but with the advancement of dental materials over the years, resin fillings are not only more natural-looking, but they are a safer choice. Amalgam fillings are held in place by mechanical retention, requiring more removal of tooth structure. They also contain mercury, and just like the mercury in a thermometer, it expands and contracts with temperature changes. This flexes the walls of the tooth and the pressure can lead to cracks and even breaks. In contrast, resin fillings are chemically bonded to the tooth, preserving more of the tooth structure, reducing the possibility of sensitivity, and are more natural-looking.

  • Crowns: Strengthening and Protecting Your Teeth

Dental crowns, or "caps," are used to strengthen and preserve teeth that are badly broken, cracked, or have cavities too extensive for a filling. Crowns are available in three materials: full gold, porcelain fused to metal, and all ceramic. The most common types are porcelain fused to metal and all ceramic, with all ceramic crowns offering the most natural appearance due to their metal-free composition, which allows light to pass through like a natural tooth. Crowns can also be used in cosmetic dentistry to close gaps or alter the shape and appearance of teeth.  You will wear a temporary crown for about 2 weeks while the permanent crown is created. During this time, you should avoid hard or sticky foods that could cause the temporary crown to crack or come off. Your dental assistant will review important instructions with you before you leave.

  • Endodontic Treatment (Root Canals): Saving Your Natural Teeth

When the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, a root canal may be necessary to save the tooth. At Alford Family Dentistry, we perform endodontic treatment to remove the infected pulp, clean the inside of the tooth, and seal it to prevent further infection. After the root canal, we often place a crown on the tooth to restore its strength and function. Root canals can alleviate pain and save your natural tooth, allowing you to maintain a healthy smile.
